The Rugby League International Origin Match is an annual rugby league fixture between the English national side and an Exiles side consisting of foreign players currently playing in the English Super League competition.[1] The match was held for the first time at Headingley Carnegie Stadium in Leeds on 10 June 2011.[2] It is hoped that this will turn into an annual fixture, replacing the previously existing annual rugby league Test match between England and France, following the one-sidedness of those tests in previous years.[1]
The Exiles RL outfit were coached by former Leeds Rhinos and New Zealand coach, Brian McClennan. McClennan's assistant coach for the 2011 fixture was Terry Matterson, the Castleford Tigers' head coach. An initial 34 man squad was announced on 6 April 2011, which was reduced to 22 with the help of a public vote. 13 out of the 22 spots were selected by the fans, as the result of an online voting system. This system was said to be the "first time in UK sporting history that the public will be able to select a team."[1]
McClennan stated that it was "a great honour to be appointed as the first coach of the Exiles team”.[1]
